The complications and various components that comprise a functioning factory or piece of infrastructure can be closely examined as a form of mechanical anatomy. By analyzing industrial infrastructure as if it were a living organism, one can compartmentalize the multitude of elements that allow the factory to breathe and live. This process develops an architectural and conceptual kit of parts that can be manipulated and experimentally arranged. Our design process and the Factory Anatomy theory compose and comprehends the structure.
The Factory Anatomy process develops and diagrams a collection of parts that can be architectural arranged and rearranged to accomplish different operations. By understanding the various anatomical elements we can now be surgeons in frankensteining a structure to accomplish different objectives based on our arrangement of these elements.

SKIN
The building envelope (traditionally brick in Lowell) is the rigid exterior that encases all the work and processes, that happen within it. It is the skin that holds all the components together.
The interior framing and structure act as the building’s bones, composing and curating the form, as well as fastening all the other elements.
BONES
The supporting structure /secondary structure that is primarily enforces sections in tension and lateral forces.
MUSCLES + TENDONS
The mechanics of the building, (Machinery, Pulleys, Turbines, Gears, Systems) are the elements that are always in motion producing and working. These organs can work both individually and in cooperation with one another to perform different functions. They provide the necessary qualities to complete tasks and jobs.
ORGANS
The humans (Factory workers, Operators, Employees), without the workers within the factory none of the other elements can perform their subjective task, they are the continuously circulating elements that all other anatomy functions for or from. Without blood pumping around the factory, the factory would not perform correctly.
BLOOD
Circulation through a central throat. Each floor can be perceived as a lung that breathes through the central throat. As occupants circulate through the building they begin to understand the organism. It also acts as a passive smoke exhaust system.
THROAT
Structure that is centrally encased (central column) in the skeletal system of the building, it is the most prominent bone within the center of the structure.
SPINE
The building facade protects and performs for the organism. The clothing shelters the body from natural elements while also becoming a form of expression. It enhances performance & comfort for its inhabitants.
CLOTHING
A foreign phenomenon attached to the exterior skin of the organism. Characteristically alien from the counterpart elements of the organism. A puncture pierced through the structure leaving a mark of memory & time without grounding itself with the roots of the organism.
